Regulatory Cooperation in Mega-Regional Trade Agreements

Trade friction in the age of global value chains is primarily due to regulatory diversity. While lack disciplines WTO context on exercise powers by states, it difficult eradicate diversity, cooperation key reducing restraints that heterogenous regulations may impose international trade. Recent mega-regional trade agreements have gone beyond and put forward novel ambitious approaches address behind-the-border non-tariff measures. After a critical review new mechanisms three agreements, this article argues these spelled out thick web procedures can be used deliver better quality domestic as well enhance governmental coordination through joint institutions monitors consistency proposed with treaty commitments. It still too early assume initiatives will significantly impact ameliorating adverse effects diversity Nevertheless, they break ground economic rule-making hold great promise.
